Dear Michael -

My husband and I have been married for 6 months we are both seniors he is 65 and I'm 57. He has tried Viagra and Cialis but neither one seem to help he seems sexually attracted to me and we do a lot of cuddling but he can not seem to maintain an erection. He and his first wife had no children he said his sperm count was very low, he never seems to have much semen when we have oral sex. I don't know if this is one of the problems that causes the erection problem. He has talked to our doctor about the erection problem and she has switched him from Viagra to the Cialis to you have any suggestions.

Help please

- A

Dear A -

From my research, there are a number of reasons why a man might have difficulty getting and maintaining an erection.

Here they are:

* Diseases and conditions such as diabetes, high blood pressure, heart or thyroid conditions, poor blood flow, depression, or neurologic disorders (such as multiple sclerosis or Parkinson's disease)
* Medications such as blood pressure medications (especially beta-blockers), heart medications (such as digoxin), some peptic ulcer medications, sleeping pills, and antidepressants
* Nerve damage from prostate surgery
* Nicotine, alcohol, or cocaine use
* Poor communication with your partner
* Repeated feelings of doubt and failure or negative communication that reinforce the erection problems
* Spinal cord injury
* Stress, fear, anxiety, or anger
* Unrealistic sexual expectations, which make sex a task rather than a pleasure

Many men are indeed helped with Viagra and/or Cialis but he does have to be sexually in the mood for the erection to happen.

As far as the small amount of semen, that can be caused by  a structural abnormality in the tubes transporting the sperm. I don't know if that would have any affect on him getting an erection but would affect his fertility.

READER'S RESPONSES:

Dear A ~

Viagra and Cialis are both effective at helping a man maintain
an erection and doctors are quick to prescribe them to men who say they need them for sexual activity. However, there could be another underlying condition. Michael mentioned several medical conditions that may contribute to lack of blood flow to the penis. One that is not listed is your husband's testosterone level. Have his doctor check his levels. Low testosterone levels can be raised with rub on gels as well as with injections.

As far as the small amount of semen, medication can sometimes cause men to produce less. Also, it's possible for a man to still have an orgasm without ejaculation. They call it retrograde ejaculation.

Enjoy the cuddling now! :-)

If indeed he has low testosterone and his levels are raised to more normal and consistent ranges you may find yourself hanging off the side of the bed... instead of just "spooning" in it. :-)

Good Luck!
